17x9 or 18x9 square??

Ok, I am having WAY more of a tough time trying to decide than I thought I would. I have an 05 ZHP sedan with the stock 135 staggered wheels. They are beautiful but as most know, they are HEAVY.

I intend on doing maybe a half dozen autocross events throughout the year so I want to go to a square set up.

The 18s for sure look better, but with difference in tires (see below) I am banging my head trying to figure out what to do.

(4) Hankook Ventus V12 EVO 255 35 18 = $700
(4) Hankook RS3 255 35 18 = $984
(4) Hankook RS3 255 40 17 = $576

So one of the arguments is would you rather go with inferior rubber (the V12 EVO) in an 18 or much better rubber (RS3) in the 17. Even with that said the 17 is still about $225 cheaper WITH the better tire.

The apples to apples RS3 in 18 vs 17 is a whopping $400+ difference.

Can I get over the loss of the 18 looking better for better performance and lower costs??

Help me decide and pics would be great!

Oh, I am 99% sure I am going to go with APEX ARC-8. Just waiting on the winter group buy.

Id go 17s as well. Personally I like the look of the smaller rims on non-Ms

Part of me has felt this way as well with a couple that I have seen. Just haven't seen the 17x9 ARC8 in person.

Ohh I didn't even realize you were getting Arc-8s. In that case I would 1,000,000% go 17's. Had 19's on my m3 and recently went to 18 arc-8s, and will never go back. The look is incredible. The e46 bodystyle just looks better with smaller rims. especially in the arc-8s.

17" Arc-8s don't look as good as the 18" variety, but they still look excellent. Everyone is correct in saying 17" tires will be cheaper. Definitely an advantage for someone who autocrosses. Have you looked into a set of 17" Kosei K1 racing wheels? They're inexpensive and lightweight. An autocross favorite.

If you're planning on seeing some track/auto-x time I would go with 17" wheels.
