ive actually been wondering since i sampled windows 8 (and absolutely hated it): could this be the beginning of the end of microsoft's dominance?

It does suck. I bought an iMac for the firs time after using Windows 8 for about a month. (life long windows user... Since Windows 3.1.). Kind of sad really. I used to think Macs were pathetic back in the 90's. (I guess they were).

I bought a new laptop yesterday, it came with Windows 8. I'm tolerating it just to learn it, but it isn't going to be on this machine for long. Back to Linux for me.

You don't like the metro shell? Change it to a Windows version you're familiar with. I've installed this on a few computers with success for the users.

i installed the same
you get the familiar "windows start button" and don't ever need to deal with the windows 8 "apps layout"

Everyone knows only every other operating system by Microsoft is good.

Win 95 - ehh..
Win 98 - a bit better
Win ME - completely horrible beyond belief
XP - good
Vista - bad
Win7 - good
Win8 - bad

So just wait til Win9 or whatever they're going to call it and it'll be good.

You missed Windows 2000 in between ME and XP -- then again, given the underlying kernel in modern Windows, it should actually read:

NT 3.1
NT 3.5
NT 3.51
NT 4.0
Windows 2000 (NT 5.0)
WinXP (NT 5.1)
Vista (NT 6.0)
Win7 (NT 6.1)
Win8 (NT 6.2)

But yeah, Win8's UI sucks...

Arent you supposed to skip a generation of windows? Wasnt it Xp was awesome the vista sucked then 7 was awesome and now 8 sucks so im waiting for the next one lol

Remember the blue screen of death? That would happen on ME more than anything else, it was so buggy.

I should have gotten a Mac like I planned. I'm not trying to pretend I bought a tablet because I bought a computer. It now takes 20 step to do something that used to take only 2.

Itried it recently, and at first I absolutely hated it, and after 2 hours I felt the same way, even simply trying to launch wordpad or "my computer" was stupidly complex compared to previous ways. With "classic shell" or Stardock's "start8" it makes the interface familiar again, I just set up the Start 8 software on my girlfriends new HP laptop, makes it easy to use so far.

yeah Start8 costs $5 but it's worth it to make a computer usable again without shelling out for a windows 7 copy if you don't have one.

I'm still on Vista x64 lol and have very very few issues with my OS, so I'm gonna stick with it until my machine dies, then move to windows 7

in my limited experience, I concur. Win8 sucks. I am more than pleased with Windows 7 though.
