When I was a bartender (2006ish) I would say 25% of people tipped over 20%. 50% of people tipped around 15%. 25% of people tipped under 15%.

Rough figures.

Valeting....well, that was a different story. $2-3 was typical, $5 was still normal, anything above $10 was out of the ordinary.

you learn quickly who's a good tipper and you give them better service.

old people, tourists, and teens get no service.

I tip very well when I feel the service person has gone above and beyond. Other wise 15-20 percent. I have tipped as much as 75% for dinner parties I have had at resturants.

Oh, and IB4 Steve Buschemi/Reservoir Dogs tirade about why tipping is bullshit.

It depends on your clientele and the type of restaurant you work at and why kind of clientele it attracts.

In NY, 18-20% is about 75%, 15% about 15%, and below 15% about 10%. Note, I am NOT counting bad tips due to bad service/issues or tourists.

In my opinion, it's better to work at a slower paced low volume restaurant so that you're not constantly having to "turn and burn" tables. This way you can attend to tables and receive decent percentages on checks.

This isn't always the case though. You can make a lot of money either way if you're working in the right place
