Right now it is a CW40. In the past I had a .380. With warmer weather approaching I plan on getting another .380. Been thinking lcp.

I did carry a full-sized 1911 .45 ACP. I'm a scrawny turd, but the 1911 is just an amazing gun. If I could afford a Commander, I'd carry it. Ever since I bought my Crossbreed Supertuck holster, I've been carrying my M&P 9mm (also full-sized).

.38 +P S&W Airweight 638 Revolver for pocket.

9mm Glock 26 or Glock 19 for holster.

I would look at the Shield (9mm) if you want .380 size.

There is a drastic terminal ballistic performance difference between .380 and 9mm. The .380 under-performs on all FBI ballistic tests, whereas the 9mm performs optimally when using quality duty-capable JHP loads. Consider that part of this is due to the fact that the .380 is an underpowered cartridge. I would never say I would never use a .380, but you can get a 9mm pistol in almost the same size and have better performance.

I carry .40S&W with Federal Tactical 180gr HST, largely due to the fact that I get my .40 ammo for free. If I didn't get my .40 for free, I'd likely be using 9mm exclusively.
I'm currently waiting on a Kahr CM9 9mm as an alt carry. I ideally want to use Federal Tactical Bonded 135gr JHP or Federal Tactical 147gr HST, but I can't get anything right now due to the current climate.

have been searching for Shield 9mm everyday for the last couple months.
and I don't want to pay a fortune for a $399 gun that's why it's harder

and thanks for great info on .380, guys.
what about .380 with hp? still ineffective?

Empirically, .380s are actually "better" with FMJ than with JHP. The JHP loads all under penetrate in the realm of about 8-11" depth into ballistic gelatin. Recommended penetration depth is 12" minimum/18" maximum. FMJs can over-penetrate through that 18" barrier, but when talking about a defense load, over-penetration is more preferable to under-penetration.

I don't think its a matter of a .380 being ineffective. Any caliber is better than no caliber. I certainly wouldn't want to be shot with any type of gun. 2 in the chest is usually enough to make anyone rethink their situation, if they are even still standing.

I would also tend to agree that number of rounds trumps it for me. Im still amazed that the Glock 19 carries 15 in a factory mag.

I sold my LCP (.380) and bought a Kahr CM9 (9mm) because I was not confident in the .380 ballistics when compared to 9mm. For virtually the same size you can get a better performing round. Granted, the LCP could be carried anywhere, any time, so it is better to have a .380 than nothing at all.

I also carry a Glock 23 (.40 S&W), but that isn't on your list

My vote is 9mm unless you cannot find a firearm that meets your needs due to size, but they make very small 9mms, so that really shouldn't be an issue.

^but of course we keep shooting the threat until it definitively ceases. A Texas DPS Trooper did this correctly last summer when he had to shoot a suspect 17 times with a .45ACP, including 3 times in the head. Drugs and mental illness are a bitch, and two rounds is rarely enough for them. In contrast, hoodlums who do stick-up robberies generally flee at the instant they are shot at, or they go down because they are weak-minded and give in to psychological incapacitation.

OP- also look into the Kahr CM9 or CW9. Very compact and quality 9mm pistols.

I actually went with from a Glock 26 9mm to a Glock 27 40cal. Size is the same and I like the 40 cal round. Some people don't like the snap. Just another caliber to consider. I carry it in my pocket holster or use the clip on behind the back.

if you're looking for a sub-compact 9mm, check out the Beretta Nano as well.
