About to buy a 2004 M3. Some questions

Hey guys whats up. New member here with some questions about a potential purchase. I daily a 40 year old car and its a BMW. Its lots of fun and have been thinking about getting another BMW.

My uncle offered to sell me his 2004 M3 SMG. The car has about 80,000 miles and from what I understand only the oil has been changed religiously during this period. He is offering it to me for 15,000 but I would like to know what parts will be needing replacing so I can take this into account for my counter offer. It leaks a bit of oil, and I know that the RTABS will need changing because I have seen his rear tires and the camber wear. I can do many repairs myself but would most likely need some guidance. What else do you guys think will need replacing? I have test driven it and everything seems fine. It does have a leaky rearview mirror that will need replacing and some other tidbits but what other mechanical parts will need replacing ASAP or in the near future.

In all honesty, go to m3forum.net and read the stickies at the top of the E46 section.

Listen closely for VANOS problems. Anything that sounds like marbles is bad. Get the subframe checked. You really need to get a PPI done on it. M3's can get expensive quick, especially if anything happens to the VANOS. A "good deal" can turn into a money pit.

Mileage isn't an issue, but maintenance is. That maintenance goes way beyond oil changes. It's due for a service 2. Has that been done? If not you're looking at dropping $$$$ right off the bat.

From my personal experience do NOT go to the stealership for your PPI. Find a good indy.

BTW- love your 2002. My dad bought one new in 1974. He still talks about how much he loved that car.

Yeah he is going to let me test drive it for a week but I have driven it before and boy is it fun.
During this test drive I'll have my cousin who is a mechanic have a look at it. He did have it
serviced at a dealership but thats all I know. The smg pump was replaced under warranty at
some point also. I'm saving up for a engine swap for the 02 but am not sure what to swap in.
I'm sure anything more than the currently 100 hp engine would make this 2300 pound car a
rocket.

Sounds like a decent buy, but I would see if you can find out more about the service history. It should have already had inspection 1 completed and at 60k+ it is certainly due for inspection II. As long as they (or you for that matter) are in there have the oil leak corrected make sure this is done asap if you decided to make the deal.

But before you commit to the purchase get the subframe and a the rest of the drivetrain inspected, have them look at the rtab while it is on a lift. As long as the car runs well and everything else is in decent condition, I would consider it a good deal.

Sounds like a good deal if the smg pump doesn't fail. $2000.00 part plus labor. I have an 04 with 65,000 miles and have only done brakes and oil changes along with some mods. Truly an awesome machine but you'd better check on insurance first and be prepared to start paying for speeding tickets!

Beautiful 02, always nice to see one around in good condition. Swap an m20 into it! They're cheap, plentiful, reliable as long as timing belt has been done, and from what I understand a nice bump in power in those cars. I'd say M30, but I don't think it fits.

I don't like SMG, but $15K is a flippin' steal for an M3 with low miles. A counter-offer would truly be an insult.

There is actually an 02 with a turbo m30 fs locally. Some rust issues but for 6500 bucks a running car thats pushing
300hp seems sweet. I'm going to test drive it and let you guys know whats up with it.
