I would suggest cleaning your carbine prior to taking it to the range as well, including the BCG and the bore.

If it's a chrome lined barrel just make sure the carbine is wet and shoot the piss out of it. If you absolutely have to break it in, fire ten rounds and then clean bore. Do that about ten times or so. I personally just took my AR out and put 500 rds through it the first day.

On another note I had no idea this thread existed, so even though I did not build my own AR I will post some pics a little later.

+1

The short answer is: "Everything."

Especially for you guys who are piecing together your own rifles. I would think none of the parts would be pre-lubed. Disassemble the bolt carrier group and oil all the parts. Oil the chamber, buffer tube, spring, and place a few drops down into the trigger group. Swab out the barrel and you're good to go.

Off-the-shelf, factory rifles are often pre-lubed and test fired before shipping but a thorough cleaning and lube job is still recommended before first use. If oil happens to collect in the barrel during shipping, and the rifle is fired without it being swabbed out, the results can be disastrous.

The Bushmaster manual can be downloaded for free and has good instruction on first use procedures and general maintenance. All these rifles are basically the same. Those sections are worth reading even if you don't own a Bushmaster.

Nice piece David. One of the nicer and cleaner setups I've seen on a forum other than a rifle/gun based one.

I just dropped my AR off to this local gunsmith that manufactures and repairs m-4 variants (Centurion Tactical). They are going to put on a magpul stock and clean and fix the bolt and carrier assembly I also get my Walther PPS .40 this friday. I will post pictures of the family (minus the PPK as Walther is fixing it) on tuesday.

Check out this torture test of their rifles. They literally fill it with sand.
