How to add a second cigerette lighter
I know, I know. My first thought is to change out my radio and put in a clean unit that can do everything I want. However, I was wondering if anyone else has figured out a way to add a second cigarette lighter for powering external units. I think the one you can get at radio shack is really ugly looking, was wondering if anyone else figured out a clearner way to do this.

I'm working on adding 5V USB ports, since most devices (phone, bluetooth headset, GPS, DS, etc) can be charged from USB.
I've got two ports in place where the cigarette snuffer went, had to fab up a trim piece to replace the cigarette snuffer. It looks pretty good but the black paint I used isn't quite the same black as the other pieces in the console. Last step is finding an appropriate place to tap into a switched 12V source, to plug in the 12V-to-5V converter/circuit board. I started with a 12V-to-5V USB converter plug from Harbor Freight, and a 2-port USB add-on board that I had in my pile of computer junk. Almost done, will post pics when it's done. |

I bought an OEM set to add to the center console from the dealership. This part costs 40$ and blends perfectly with the interior.
Here are the pics of my setup: ![]() ![]() |

I pulled the part numbers for the cig lighter pictures above from the ETK. i looked at tisher and they sell them for 78.50 a piece. looks like it comes as a complete kit, i dont see any seperate part numbers for the actual lighters, but you may want to email them before ordering.

I have the glove box BMW adapter, but I kinda like the OEM smokers kit, I think they called it that. Kinda expensive though, but when I have a spare $100 bucks to get it with shipping.....I might go that route. Not sure I really need it though, but cool and different.

Okay, that's hott. Where did you get power for the power outlets? What about the backlighting? I'm ordering one tomorrow if it will fit my cabrio.

CTD:
Would you happen to have a pic of the entire back seat facing the cig lighters? How are they mounted? Would it fit a sedan? |

ran it back thru the ETK for you. yes it fits sedan and coupe just not the cabrio because of the angle of the "hump"

For the less permanent solution, the OEM BMW flashlight -> cigarette lighter adapter works really well and most of the time your local dealership should carry it in stock.
What are you trying to power though? You really don't want to be overloading those cigarette lighters, and you could be better off hardwiring your things to the car.

It does fit sedans!
AND, it does NOT come stock in European bimmers! I've never seen this thing anywhere before here in Europe! I'll make a pic when I go to the body shop today! |
