I would go with the Simota CF Ram Style Intake which is a carbon fiber enclosed cone filter replacement. This is available with a dry filter element that will be easier to maintain and will last the life of the car.

You should probably find a board that deals with the e36. They can probably help you better than we can.

Intakes make your car a little louder. No noticeable performance gain. Buy an AMSOIL air filter. Do NOT spend 300-500 on an itake, that's retarded.

As far as i've seen its the best drop in filter out there. Do not buy K&N, we've just had a big discussion on how crap they are and how much dirt they let in. CAI's in my opinion make no additional power at best alone, they work better with other bolt ons however (exhaust, headers, and software) but even then you're not going to see anything over 2hp. They do look sweet though, so if you're looking to throw some money at a piece of junk at least get a CF one.

It will better to consult the car dealer instead of consulting anyone else. The car dealer will show you the right way.

K&N drop in filter. lifetime filter, just oil occasionally. protects your engine but is less restrictive then stock filter.
the thing is unless your engine needs more air ie supercharger, you are just fine witha drop in replacement.
