The part numbers on realoem.com show the rear bar is the same as an i. Still need to check bushings, brackets, and endlinks to make sure they are the same parts numbers.

In other news, I did my front sway bar end links last night. It's pretty easy if you have the right tools. You need to jack up the front end (take off both wheels) and use a T-30 torx bit on a socket to hold the bolt stationary while you spin the nut with a 16mm wrench. The closed end on a standard craftsman wrench worked well but those ratcheting type wrenches are too big (which would have made it a 5 minute job each side).

I bought the OEM style lemfoerder one from pelicanparts.com. It made a noticeable difference and for $60 its a no-brainer. The suspension is much quieter now and I could be making this up, but turn-in feels tightened up.

I have 87k on my xi.

Not sure what you were looking at on realoem, but the rear bars are not the same between XI and I. The rear bar for an XI is 20mm, part number 33556751267. The rear bar for an I is 18mm, part number 33551095758, or for an I w/ sports suspension it is 19mm part number 33551094545.

That being said, I would venture to guess that the shape is the same, and you would be able to take a rear sway bar (along with its specific mounting bushings) from an I to an XI and vice-versa. I can confirm the endlinks are the same part number, and so are the brackets that hold the bushings.

For the front sway bar, there are no parts in common between an XI and an I, and I would guess that the shape of the bar is completely different, since the XI's bar has bushings which mount the the XI's subframe, in completely different locations than where the I's bar mounts to.

If you put the part number in realoem.com it gives you a cross-reference on all the cars it fits. It's always worked out well for me . . .

Part Cross-reference
RealOEM.com Home

Part 33556751267 (Stabilizer, rear) was found on the following vehicles:

E46: Details on E46
E46 323Ci Convertible
E46 325Ci Convertible
E46 330Ci Convertible
E46 325xi Touring
E46 325xi Sedan
E46 330xi Sedan

Details for all

ah, so it shares the rear bar with the convertible w/ sports suspension. But that would be a Ci, not an i, which is a RWD sedan. But anyways, that's a nice find, because it confirms that the rear bars are in fact the same shape, and can be swapped freely between all E46 models. Which means any aftermarket rear sway can be put on an XI. Nice!

Good information guys. I wonder what is the benefit of upgrading only the rear bar?

Upgrading the rear bar will decrease understeer & body roll. Both very good things for XI's. Of course there is a limit on how big of a bar to get - too big and your rear inside tire will come off the ground in a very hard corner, making it quite difficult to accelerate out of that corner.

Any particular size bar is perfect? 21mm? 22mm? 23mm?

did i hear group buy???

i'd be soo down! i've been looking for front say bars for over 4 years now. well maybe not the whole 4 years... but long enough.

was that 400 price a quote for both or only the front? cause that'd be kinda high for just the front sway.

You don't want an upgraded front sway on an xi. Just the rear. Unless your goal is to be able to say you have sway bars, just get a rear bar.

Ok?

I would rather have an H&R, hotchkis, or Racing Dynamics over UUC, myself.

I think we should try and do a group buy on H&R rear bar for ~$150.

Turner sells the rear bar for $209, trying a group buy for $150 will be tough

Racing Dynamics discontinued the set back in '05, none of their vendors nor RD themselves have any left in stock. They did give me some hope for a limited production re-run, but never got back to me with the details regarding how many units would have to be ordered. I've got a thread on it in the suspension forum. If you find anything new has changed since I check last year, please let me know.

I did have a lead about getting some custom sways bent, adjustable rear and increased thickness for the front to reduce roll.

This is for the Front/Rear adjustable sways for the e46 XI? Or just the adjustable rear?
