Shrick Cam Install Thread

Hey there, fellow power junkies! Hopefully this will turn out to be a very positive and informative thread, and not a thread showing how NOT to install cams.

I was fortunate enough to pick up a set of slightly used cams from everyone's favorite e46 Canadian. They've been through a little trauma, but I prefer to think of them as broken in.

We had worked out a deal for me to buy the cams a while before the incident, as he's planning on running some different cams. I guess he just hasn't made quite enough power! (More power to him).

Anyway. Cams came in last night. Opened this morning and found this.

It's about what I expected. Even though they look rough, I'm sure Adam did about 99% of the work towards getting them cleaned up. He was even cool enough to send me some 600 & 400 grit wet/dry paper and scotch pads.

I grabbed the exhaust cam to tackle first. Grabbed my handy AutoGlym and a scotch pad:

MUCH better!:

I still have a bit to do, but most of it's gone. Spend a bit over an hour scrubbing. It's currently soaked in WD40 wrapped in plastic-wrap. I'll go over it again with the scotch pad, and then lightly wetsand the lobes and journals with the 600, as instructed.

I have 2 fellow Fanatics that were awesome enough to loan me the tools to get this job done. The rear cam holders came in today, along with a set of soft vise jaw liners to do the Beisan vanos rattle procedure. I'll document this along with the cam install, itself. Vanos tool kit is coming in from another awesome Fanatic. Should be here when he finishes up his current project. I won't mention their names, btw. I'm sure they don't want everyone (myself included) hitting them up to borrow tools. But a big thanks, you know who you are.

Vise Liners:

Rear cam lock tool:

I'll add more as it happens! Hopefully this will turn into a good DIY for people who want to tackle this in their own garage.

Let me know what you think!

I put the upgraded seals in a while back. Fairly easy DIY.

Haha! If I had anything else to post, I would.

I'm going to need you to dyno. Then you have to fly down here, and help me install my cams (when I get them)

OK, dumb question.............is a cam/diff swap only beneficial for those with a manual transmission, or can us autos also benefit?

You pay for the airfare There will definitely be a before/after dyno. I won't install until I hit the rollers, no matter how tempting.
