The Official E46 Parts List: Maintenance Items

Disclaimer: everyone knows the Xi is an exception to every single rule so this thread does not cover the Xi and/or iT. Some parts will be the same but it is mainly for the early E46s, nonetheless I will add full 323/325/328/330 i/Ci/Cic support later. And make every part number clearer for some people. Use this list at your discretion, as always, I am not liable for mis-ordered parts.

I see threads all the time asking for part numbers so I decided to compile a list of the most common maintenance items on E46s. I know this is a lost cause but you have to try anyway. With the exception of a few parts categories, I think this list is all encompassing. This list is all OEM parts, no aftermarket. So in places like what brake pads to use, I have only listed OEM pads. All of the part numbers root from my car, a 2000 328Ci. I have paid careful attention to where models matter and have indicated as such. If you know the part number is different for your car, tell me and I can add it in! Enjoy

Here is how the lists are sorted:

If you see a diagram reference number of 0, it is because the part listed doesn't correlate to the diagram above it. The manual parts conversion part doesn't have diagram reference numbers right now. I will put them later.

Front End Suspension: Some of the common wear and tear items are Control Arm Bushings as everybody has experienced I'm sure. Also the ball joints on the stock Control Arms go bad frequently and because they are pressed in, you have to replace the entire arm. Some part numbers for wheel bearings (If you have a groaning noise coming from your wheel when driving). And if you hear clunking while going over bumps your strut tower mount could be bad. Swaybar endlinks are also common wear items if you are lowered on stock suspension components.

Rear End Suspension: Oh the dreaded CV joints, you will hear the squealing all the time while driving. Also some part numbers for common maintenance items like the rtabs and rear strut mounts which blow out all the time, guaranteed. Lift your trunk lining to check

Steering: Power Steering pumps are not so common failures on these cars but it does happen here and there. There are 2 kinds of pumps you can get, one is what we like to call 'over-boosted' and it makes the car feel artificial. If you have a loose feeling in the steering wheel, be sure to check your flexible steering coupling as it is a very common wear item. All of the hoses you need are included if you need to replace your ps pump

Brakes: I personally don't mind OE brake pads, they do dust a lot but I have no complaint about the bite

Engine related parts/seals/gaskets: A bad rear main seal is very evident. You will have oil spewed all over the bottom of the transmission and if it is bad enough, it will make your clutch start to slip if you own a manual. Crank and Cam sensors are pretty common occurrences in e46s and the oil level sensor is also a known maintenance item. I've included the VCG as just a common replacement item

CCV Set: If you live in a cold climate these things blow all the time. You will notice your oil disappearing as it is being burned because of the failure of this vapor separator. All of the lines are included as you need to replace them as well, they become brittle and break as the result of oil and age.

Belts/Pulleys Engine: A lot of people have problems with their mechanical belt tensioner failing and as a result they need to replace it obviously. But BMW stopped making the mechanical tensioner so here is the part number to buy the new hydraulic tensioner.

Cooling System Related: The Achilles' heel of the e46. The cooling system is the most common failure item on these cars from my experiences. BMW has always been weak at making good cooling systems but nonetheless, here are the parts you need to buy for a full overhaul.

Intake/Exhaust System: A low idle can come from a bad idle control valve or even the adjuster unit (DISA unit) in some cases. These are easy items to replace so the part numbers have been included for these. O2 sensors go bad all the time, especially the pre-cat ones. If you ever take off your exhaust, new gaskets should be ordered so here are the part numbers for those as well. Also, a lot of people don't know this but your exhaust hangers go bad all the time.

A lot of people experience what is called a "sticky 5th gear." If you decide to do the 5th/reverse fix, it's very wise to fix the shifter pins as well because the transmission is already out. There are 3 shifter pins plus the pins for 5th/reverse.

Thanks for the excellent work! I'm sure this will save many hours of searching and it will become a very useful and popular reference. IMHO, a sticky is well deserved for this.

I'm very interested in the sticky fifth fix, since my clutch will need replacing in a few months.

Two part numbers are listed for the locking pins. Are two of each needed for a total of four locking pins? Are sealing caps not required for 5th/reverse?

I seem to remember a DIY for this, but I can't find it at the moment.
