Trying to find a car for my parents

Looking for some advice. My dad is clinging to a 1990 Taurus that is being eaten alive by rust. 300,000+ miles, engine is stong, transmision is ok, but most of the other systems are failing, plus the rust is starting to eat into structural components of the body and frame. My parents are currently looking at an '01 Acura CL with 164,000 miles. I told them if they can get it for cheap, say $2k, go for it but be prepared to rebuild the auto tranny because that generation CL and TL have horrible transmission problems. All four brakes and rotos need replacement, UCAs need new balljoints, and a couple other things. Interior and paint are in good condition.

This morning I found a '95 525i right down the street from a friend's house back in Cincinnati-

150k miles, auto trans, asking $2995. Looks clean but I'd like to know if any of you folks have info on common problems with this generation 5 series that my parents should be asking about. Thanks!

I Have the exect same car

I can tell you this was a great car. I have hade this car since new. The car had little to no problems; i mean no major issues until after 300,000 miles. The car was running great, short of the story, hit a dog, transmission cooler line got pinched burned up tranny. I put a used engine and transmission in the car at about 300, 000 miles. When I took the old engine apart it was like new. I had to replace the usual, fuel pump, radiator and alternator, and Window motor. The car is very easy to work on. The car now has over 401,000 miles been given to my son who recently wrecked it. But still going strong.

A good friend of mine drove an E34 535i about 400k miles before he sold it; I know the 525i's have a slightly newer design for the engine, but I'd imagine they can last just as long w/ the proper maintenance.

Edit: It was a 5-speed tho, I have no idea how reliable the auto transmission is
