i love how a lot of you here get right on it to put in some negative opinion towards this.... i think this is the first person to say i was doing it at an EMPTY parking lot and at 12:00 am. he was having fun and learning some things so with that said i give you a definate thumbs up! and hell its fun who hasn't messed around in the snow its fun

@OP regarding engine braking.

If you can't row through the gears fast enough to engine brake, try "skipping" a gear, complimenting the engine braking with a touch of the real brakes. Watch your RPMs though, but the E46's gears are so short it can help to skip a gear here to there. Double-clutching is a must.

Practising in a wide open place with no risk to others and little to yourself makes sense. Good for you on getting to know the feel for how the car works in slippery conditions. Try: when the car begins to slide, get off throttle and attempt to control the direction of the car using steer/counter steer. Next try braking when the car goes into a slide. Note the difference. Slamming on the brakes pitches the car forward lifting the rear which will reduce grip. Not what you want.

Regarding DSC, in general I'd say leave it for driving on the public roads since it can detect a slide faster than you can. BMW lets you turn it off for occasions when the car is stuck (e.g. in the snow) and you want to spin the wheels to help free yourself. It is a lot of fun with it off though.

Finally, GET SNOWS. There is no substitute for a good set of snow tires. Get 4 tires, not 2. If you're planning to get just 2, don't bother. It's barely better than 0. It is my impression that the general, non-driving enthusiast has a basic misunderstanding about AWD. When stopped, say in a drift of snow, AWD drive works great and can have an advantage over RWD/FWD. Once you're moving though, it's a different story. Momentum carries you forward. Friction reduces that movement. No friction, no reduction in movement. Snow tires give you the extra bite you need to slow down.
