good idea, but it his the ring gear itself. I mean machining it down would be okay to mock up, but if i were to have the ring gear on it, it would still hold it back.

SOOOOOo i did work today. I'll upload pics maybe later tonight, but i just wanted to give you guys a jist of what i did today.

As far as the problem i thought i would have a couple of post up, it shouldn't be a problem as from the factory the housing cuts into the bearing seat already, so I think as long as I keep it a clean edge, i should be okay.

I also got the carrier into the housing!!! no ring gear just yet, but the carrier is in there. I need to grind some more down to get the ring gear to fit in with the carrier.

One issue i noticed was that the open diff is a tad bit longer (output shaft bearing to output shaft bearing) than the lsd. It's a total of about 1/4 of an inch. So about an 1/8th on each side. But i also noticed that the bearings on the open aren't flush mounted like the lsd ones are. So i might be able to pull out about a 1/16th on each side by not flush mounting the bearing (and make it like the open). So i'd have a difference of a 1/16th on each side that i'm still short. Will it be a problem? i have no clue how close tolerances on diffs have to be. I'll have more pics to show you guys exxactly what i mean, if you guys are confused.

you would have to put some shims under the bearing, so the carrier does not "slide" sideways when under load. but like you say, the open diff is not flush mounted, are the bearings somewhat close ended?

shims would also allow you the opportunity to adjust tooth contact pattern.

don't forget to check pinion depth too.

Are the bearings themselves taller? They look to be. Can you pull them off and swap them? If so, that might save someone a little grinding, too. If I'm wrong, sorry, I can't tell from the pics. Great work, though. You may need a new sig pic, soon!

yeah, i have to pretty much read up on all of that stuff. I think one of my friends used to install carriers into housings so hopefully he'll know how to check the pinion depth, and shimm it out correctly. If not i have to find someone local who can do a proper job for me.

I also don't understand what you mean about close ended. but i just uploaded pics.

No, the bearings look to be about the same size.

Man, you're right there with this project.... Hard part is done! You might need to order a finned cover and some good shockproof fluid, soon!

yeah, since i got hte carrier in the housing, it seems like it's a very plausible solution for lsd.

okay, so i've been toying with the idea of fully rebuilding the diff (if i can get it to fit correctly) & adding a clutch to increase the lockup ratio.

I found this thread and i thought i'd be interesting for a few of you here.

that's the thing, i know if i don't rebuild it before i install it, it probably won't come out unless i upgrade. But probably testing it out is better than dropping all my money in it before i know it works for sure.

Yeah, definitely test it out first. Don't throw another variable into the equation. Get it tested out first.
