more specifically:

Heart failures occur either due to natural causes (87%) or outside factors (13%). Suppose 20 patients visit a doctor with heart failure.

what is the probability that 3 individuals have conditions caused by heart failure?

would it be (0.13)^3 * (0.87)^17 * number of combinations of which patients could be the ones with outside factors?

so (0.13)^3 * (0.87)^17 * (2)^20?

not sure if that last term is right, mos def isnt, it should be:

20!/(3!17!) right? anyone?

I'm pretty sure you phrased problem incorrectly, in the first statement you state that 20 patients visit a doctor for heart failure, then your question is how many patients have conditions caused by heart failure.

Well if they're all visiting the doctor for heart failure, I'd imagine their symptoms are caused 100% by heart failure

probability of 3 of them having heart failure caused by outside factors

i didnt proof read, i fail.

I think i got it. Now the next question is:

What is the mean and standard deviation of the number of individuals with conditions caused by outside factors? I think i can get that one on my own

I dont think you want to help me That'll be a decently big commitment

(20 choose 3)* .13^3 *.87^17

Mean(outside) = .13*20
Variance(outside) = .13*.87*20

I trust you over my interpretation of these definitions, but why is your method different?

for variance they give me:

Sigma(x-mean)^2f(x)
x
