Need Help!!! E36 m3 question

Hello everybody, this is actually my first time posting so bear with me. I have been without a car for a couple of months now. I had a 2001 330i great car, loved it, it had 170,000 miles on it and it still drove like brand new , long story short i was in a accident and it was totaled . Now ive been looking for a replacement, and i really would like a M3. Ive found a E36 m3 1999 black on nappa gray leather, 52,000. It's in great shape overall, no modifications, and the seller said no problems with Rsm's. He's asking a lot i think, 16999 obo, im not planning on giving him what he wants. I was thinking 14500-15000, but anyway, I ran an autocheck and it came up clean. The E46 M3 is what i really want but because of school and just a lack of funds i cant afford one right now. Someday! Sry! Got off track. So, what my questions are; Are they good cars? Reliability? I am a student and i do drive a lot, so i want a car that's not going to end up in the shop every couple of months. I love taking care of my cars, and i do all maintnance on my own. Is it going to be much more expensive than the e46 330i to maintain? Im sorry for my rambling on, i wanted to thank everybody from now for their responses. It is much appreciated!

E36 M3's are fantastic fun to drive even today. I owned a 97 M3 years ago. It was pretty trouble-free. The earlier E36 M3's had several issues mechanically as well as electrical, but the later models were a ton more reliable. It's going to feel lighter and sharper than your 330- especially the steering.

Make sure you take it to a mechanic to get the car inspected. E36 M3's that are clean, low mileage, and in good shape are getting harder and harder to find. You'll def. pay more for a well maintained low mileage one. Long term, the maintenance costs on the E36 models is a LOT cheaper than any of the E46 vehicles.

Insurance (for me anyway) was about the same as my 330Ci.

That seems pretty high, almost into E46 M3 territory (well, shitty E46 M3 territory at least). I've heard great things about the E36 M3s, though, and as much as I love the E46 body style, I'd probably get an E36 M if I did it again.
