No more Pilkington windshields?

Got my 2004 330 windshield replaced at the dealer yesterday. The windshield is not made by Pilkington as the old one was. Rather it is made by ***8203;Saint Gobain Sekurit. BMW logo is still there, stamped on the windshield however...

I guess BMW switched suppliers...

I ordered a windshield in January and it was Pilkington. I think they have more than one supplier and it depends what you get?

mine was also replaced by a saint gobain sekurit. From what I've seen, they're generally stronger windshields.

Sekurit is actually a better windshield, Porsche has used them for many years.

the roundel-stamped sekurit windshield is genuine OEM and the best you can buy. The ones that just say Pilkington with no roundel are made in China and aren't that great of quality.

Good, the Pilkington is pretty brittle.

My 03 has a Sekurit (original), my 04 had a Pilkington (original). They never really "switched." It just depends what they have in stock. Both are OE and of good quality.

actually youre wrong.. the pilkington and sekurit are still the same thing just without the bmw logo, and pilkington i believe is the biggest oem supplier of autoglass. xyg and fyg are chinese crap, and there IS some chinese glass out there marked with PPG or Pilk, u can tell by the DOT number on the glass where it was made... if its 563 or 459 its chinese.. most pilkingtons are 177 or 682 i believe, with the 682's usually being for mercedes and bmw but not with the oem logo, and the ones with the oem logo will have the same dot number so it came from the same plant..

PPG makes a good replacement windsheild...fit is excellent and you can get them with prefitted rain/light sensor prisms.

I notice that Saint-Gobain Sekurit makes all the glass except the windshield on mine. So it makes sense to source windshield replacements from them.

ok. well, if you get pilkington from a glass shop without a roundel, and it's $200 like they all are, it's from china. check the DOT number on it. Lots of things are from China, so if it's OK with you, there's nothing wrong with it.

i just told u pilkington isnt made in china... i actually dont know if ive ever seen a fake chinese pilkington but i for sure have seen chinese ppg which are marked with dot 563, but theyre rare. just because it doesnt have a roundel doesnt mean its any different, just like if lets say bosch makes an oe part for bmw, u buy that same part as a replacement from pep boys and its made by bosch, its still the same just without the bmw logo, part number, and markup..

plus even windshields from china still have to pass the same US safety and strenth tests as any other...

bmw and mercedes both make people return their leased cars with OEM windshields, but usually only if they know beforehand that its cracked. like if they do the return inspection and tell u the windshield is cracked and need to be replaced, they will tell u it has to be an oem. same if u call and ask beforehand. i do a ton of them for the bmw and mercedes dealers by where i work. funny thing is i havent done any for someone who has their w/s replaced earlier with an aftermarket thats not broken when they go to take the car back...

plus i dont know if its even legal for a car company to require only oem replacement parts, but they will do it and tell u to do it, it leads to more money for them
