Quick Exhaust Size Question

I could not find the answer to this to save my life, Ive been looking for about an hour and a half now, Im sure you can imagine how many exhaust threads there are on this site. It has recently come to my attention that my 325i has two pipes leading into the muffler, I am looking at the Vibrant stealth muffler that has a single inlet, so obviously I need a Y pipe. What size are the stock 325i exhaust pipes, are the 2.5 in.? Thanks in advance for your help, Im ordering my exhaust components as soon as I have the information.

Second question, Im trying to find Y pipes on Ebay, would it be cheaper to have one made? If my mechanic has a functional welder at his shop (recent flood) I would take it to him but I doubt he has the correct sized pipe just laying around. Could I potentially pick some piping up at a hardware store or something and have it be cheaper yet non-restrictive?

Is 2.75 the correct size of the stock 325i pipes or is that a different size you suggest I go with?

Go to http://drgas.mybisi.com/product/stra...rge-collectors

get the 2.25 to 3 inch Y pipe. The actual pipes on the 325 are about 2inches (actually a little less) and will slip to fit in the Y pipe.

$110 for the Y pipe?! Thats almost as much as the muffler Im buying, I think Ill stick with the ebay magnaflow options that are about $30. Thanks for the help on the size though.

You'll get what you pay for with a Y collector. They can make or break you on power.

Will it really matter at the very end right at the muffler? And would the straight through design of the muffler cancel out any of the restrictions of a cheaper Y pipe? I have a 325i and the only engine modification I have is a K&N SRI from the previous owner. Im just having the shop make one for me now anyways. Im just doing the exhaust for the sound, I wasn't aware that there could be performance changes, positive or negative, from it.

Make sure you have it convert to a single pipe about 6-12 inches from the header. A good amount of torque and some peak power can be gained.

Im assuming that you mean that I should have my entire exhaust system, from 6-12 in. from the header, converted to a single pipe correct? Ill eventually move to this but at the moment Im just adding the axel-back unit. Eventually Id like to do a single 3in. from the cat with a single resonator and the muffler. Right now though I just have a little extra money to spend and would like to give my car a little extra bark without being too loud.

Did you end up putting this exhaust? I'm looking into buying this and I also have a stock 325i. Thanks :-)
