I don't think alpine would sell something here which doesn't work. So now I have no idea if we are under MPEG-2 or MPEG-4? Hopefully someone here can further clarify.

Here it is from the horses mouth... http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD..PC/pc=PC_91870 "Australian terrestrial television services are currently broadcast using the MPEG 2 standard which can provide both Standard Definition and High Definition services. While some countries have chosen to use MPEG 4 for the provision of HD services transition to MPEG 4 is not planned in Australia at this time. MPEG 4 functionality can also assist in other functions with receivers such as connectivity to computers, camcorders and other digital devices. Some manufacturers will incorporate MPEG 4 into their digital receivers to increase the functionality of the devices and future proof those receivers against any possible future change. The ACMA notes that broadcasters have announced, before they make any move to change their transmission streams to MPEG 4, they would consult with the government. The ACMA recognises the value of incorporating MPEG 4 into a receiver specification to 'future proof' the receiver for possible changes in technology in the longer term. " The exact standard is I believe; AS/NZS 13818.2:2002 It looks like you need to pay to buy the document. References to AS/NZS 13818.2:2002 can be found here: http://www.freetv.com.au/media/Engin...on_Issue_1.pdf "3.1. Minimum File Format Specification The minimum specification for the file format of the commercial product shall be an MPEG-2 Transport Stream," Last edited by fgin; 06-30-2010 at 11:45 PM. |

"Analog broadcasts will be switched-off, on a region-by-region basis, between 2010 and 2013"
But if you all want DTV then I will get those for you but they will not work. Check this out. http://www.digitalready.gov.au/rolloutmap_VIC.aspx Relocation kit price: Individual buttons version = $87 Single row version = $125

Single row (Single panel of buttons = one strip without breaks in it that all the buttons fit into.
![]() Individual buttons = Button strip where you can add other buttons by cutting the strip shorter. ![]() Note the line on the edge that breaks up the button.

From my understanding, the analog signal will continue till 2013 somewhere in Australia while the digital signal too will be available as it does already (which is why we can, at this moment in time, view HDTV on our new TVs or use a set-top box to receive the digital channels on older analog only TVs), however between 2010 - 2013 the analog signal will be turned off region by region and by 2013 only the digital signal will prevail. Coincidentally today Mildura was the first region to turn off the analog signal which means they will have only transmit digital signals, any one who has an analog tv will be dumping it or getting a set-top box in Mildura today; http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/h...0630-zmvk.html Last edited by fgin; 07-01-2010 at 02:54 AM. |

So by 2013 or sooner this unit will be worthless if you want to watch TV on it

I wouldn't say worthless. In fact you can attach a DVB-T box and control via IR remote.

Probably but it still doesn't make the unit worthless (those that want to watch tv) because it is still possible to do so.
