Your laser has gone bad. I have the same problem. I just ordered the laser to fix the MK IV this week. Here's a guide for process.

And here's where you can buy the laser. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-SANYO-SF-HD4...item3a55358709

Burn a firmware update for the MKIV on a CD, if the CD loads then the laser is definitely your problem.

You can always just buy the DVD drive itself so you don't have to open it up and replace the laser yourself. It's called DVD m3 4.6. I can't find any sources for it in the U.S., only a few stores in the Netherlands and Germany carry it, and that will run you about 150-200 Euros with shipping. If you think you can do it, might as well replace the laser and save cash.

Woops, the laser I linked you is the wrong one. I found this out too late as well.
Here's the right one if you're interested: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-SANYO-SF-HD4...item439cb6253c

try unplugging the battery overnight before you tear your DVD drive apart.
