M3 oem strut life expectancy!

Hi i am getting to go back to stock suspension on my 2001 m3. I have h&r springs in it now i will be puttin my oem springs back in. The car has 20 k miles on it. Do struts go by miles or time for life expectancy? How do i know if they are shot? just wondering what im up against before i take stuff apart?

They're directly going to be affected by miles and the types of roads you drive on coupled with your driving style a lot more than their age, that will come into affect last.

As N89 said, just about everything comes into account, and some things more than others.

As for whether springs are worn out or not is hard to tell. Usually good indicators are how bouncy the ride is and visual inspection for things like damage, rust, or leaking seals. With only 20,000 miles, I'd guess your OEM shocks would probably still be in decent condition.
