suspension help

Hey guys so after doing some reading about shocks/struts etc i started thinking about if mine need to be changed...i got my xi at 40,000 and its currently at 72,000..to my knowledge the shocks have never been replaced. you guys think i should maybe invest in new shocks? if so, what do you recommend. sounds like i should either go with Bilstein sports or Koni Yellow. Since we're on the subject maybe you guys could recommend springs as well and anything else i might need. Thanks for the help

I can tell you that my rear passenger spring broke recently at 63,000 miles so I had to do something. My car doesn't take the bumps like it use to so I'm replacing the springs, struts/shocks at all four corners tomorrow. I'm going with the Bilstein HD's and the Eibach Pro-kit for the springs. I know it will be a little harsh as compared to the original setup but I doubt that my current struts/shocks have much life left in them anyway. I'll let you know how everything goes after tomorrow.

I had both rear springs crack. I went with Eibach Pro's & Koni Adjustables. The drop is about 1" or so. Very close to the original ride.

go with the h&r sport springs if you want more performance than the eibachs, stiffer, lower, etc.

what kind of shocks do you recommend?

I was told that H & R and Bilstein for performance - Eibach and Koni for ride quality.

At 72,000 mi your shocks likely wore out 22,000 mile ago. It would be no surprise if your factory springs are broken as well (mine broke at 35,000 miles).
For a great ride and adjustability go with Koni Sports and Eibach Prokit Springs

xi ter, how would i know if they wore out? i havent noticed a change in my ride/performance and dont see or notice for that matter any leakages is there another way i can tell if i crawl under the hood?

The degrade happens over the space of 70,000 miles so it's hard to notice. Mine weren't leaking either, but when I took them off, I could move the piston up and down by hand. You might look for diving during sudden braking, noises, other suspension components starting to wear rapidly, uneven wearing of tires.
After 50,000 miles design life, the original shocks owe you nothing. If you do buy replacements, inspect the old ones during shock replacement DIY and leave the old ones on for a year if they are good. Expect after 72,000 mi the shock will probably move up and down in your finger tips, completely worn out.
