Automatic: Gears Replaceable?
I have been told that 4th gear ratio is way too much of a drop in RPM (and I agree it is). This got me thinking - can 4th gear be replaced with a better ratio or are two or more gears on the same shaft? I am just really unfamiliar with this automatic.

I haven't heard of that being done, but the diff gearing can certainly be changed.

If he has a auto 330 zhp his gears are already maxed out. For non M. You should have 3.64s 0r 3.62s i forget which (i know one is m3 one is auto zhp). You need a tranny swap. I'd get a 6 speed and leave your rear diff alone. just my 2 cents

Thought briefly about changing rear end ratio but that affects the whole RPM/speed range and the only problem is that 4th gear in an automatic has the wrong ratio as it drops the RPM down way too much. Just curious as to what can be changed in this automatic.

Keep it clean

You can slap a 3.91 from an X3 in there, too.
But no, that won't specifically help your 4th gear issue.
