I've decided to make a little change to the interior of the car.

Having passengers in the back causes the car to rub uncontrollably, and the rear seat is torn anyways. My solution? Rip it all out, build a shelft out of high density foam, and mount the subwoofer in the cabin.

Stay tuned for updates.

My rears are in good condition, but I may end up taking it out for weight and getting some extra carpet to cover it.

may I recommend that you also replace the central ground wiring and route new speaker wires? the speaker wires that came in these originally is very small and you cannot get the sound quality your expecting. I have skipped around this thread so i might have missed the part where you mentioned it but its an issue you should consider. wouldnt be too big of a pain either.

I've read of this and I completely agree. It's too much of a pain though. I'm going to power my speakers through the amp in my head unit, so I think it should be "ok". Perhaps in due time, right now, I just want decent sound.

I should have some good updates by the end of the week.

A couple updates as promised.

First thing's first, I got a lip for the front bumper from Ryan G. over on e30tech.com. Looks great!

Secondly, the new Pioneer headunit I bought was put on the car (iPod, Bluetooth), along with some Polk Audio speakers (cheap open-box from www.cowboom.com) and the subwoofer setup I put together. I put some dynamat in and around the speaker housings and along the rear wheel arches to keep some of the roadnoise out.

and for good measure, a little ghost courtesy of my friends in Jukebox the Ghost (fine young chaps, www.myspace.com/jukeboxtheghost)

It's perfect. The car isn't big, so it's only an 8" running 150 watts or so. Sounds great.

Upgrading audio is fun.

Did you run new speaker wire to each new speaker? Or use the wiring in the dash?

I just used the wiring in the dash. I thought about running all new wiring, but that was just too much work. I'm powering the speakers off the headunit anyways. The common grounds seem to turn a lot of people off, but I think they're fine. Car sounds 10000x better.

The stock BMW wiring may not be very big, but any copper wiring that is still brand new shiny after 20 years is pretty high quality.

7 grand for a clean m50 swapped car? its ok, the car is very clean so the price should be high, but I have seen these go for as low as 5.5 grand.

Ken, contrary to what most installers would say, these cars do not have a common ground. can you snap a pic of how your wiring harness looks like?

It's good that you use the stock wiring as the quality of copper is higher grade than that currently out of the market. Heck even the e46 uses 10g wire compared to the 14g e30's have.
