Lowering E46 sedan, how much?

Hi, I'm still a little confused as to why there are no threads on how much you should lower your car. Shouldn't this be the main concern when lowering?!

Anyway...

I have an E46 99 mod, with 19/235/40 tires and it rubs (in the back) when there are 3 og more people in the car. I don't know how much the car is lowered, the previous owner don't know either (fucchead). Therefore I have to get new springs for the car (the eu-control requires info on the springs also so I would have had to buy new springs anyway..). Since I don't know how much the car is lowered to begin with, I really dont know how much I should lower it. I'm not really into superlow and stiff cars, as long as the car doesn't look like a SUV, I'll be pretty much happy with it. I've got a feeling that the car is lowered 50/40 mm right now. So I've been thinking of going with 40/20 mm, cause I like it when it's a little taller in the back, looks more aggressive. but I need help with this... The car must not be unpractical in any way when driving it, but it must look aggressive and not like a SUV. Tips?

If you want, I can post a pic with 19" on it, so you can take a guess on how much it is lowered.

For reference I am running 245/35/19 in the rears and am lowered on an H&R Touring Cupkit. You can look up the specs of the drop on H&R's website. Comfortable ride with a very slight rub on dips. Rubbing is going to be dependent on your wheel offset as well, not just your tire size. Your wheel offset may have a lot more to do with your rubbing than your tire size actually.

Thx for posting. I can see that your car is lowered by a lot.. And on H&R's website it says that the touring cup kit lowers the car by 1.5 inches (roughly 40mm) which I think will be too much if I'm going to keep my wheels (which I'm going to do). But from the looks of it (comparing mine to yours) I'll say that my car is probably lowered 40 mm in the back and 50 mm in the front. How's the rubbing with 5 people in the car? And where is it rubbing? Thx in advance for replying

I never have 5people in my car. I have two young kids so their car seats are usually in the back seat. My kids weigh 50 lbs combined so that is not a good measure. I am actually not exactly sure where they are rubbing. I never really checked but I just assumed it was the fender lip.

255/35/18 in the rear. Lowered on EIbach Prokit.
Never rubs even with full cabin.

Without wheel width+offsets and tire selection, this info is almost useless.

I ran stock ZHP wheels with 255/35/18 PS2s on a slightly lowered suspension with no rubbing. Changed to an 18x9 et 42 (from 18x8.5 et 50) with slightly wider 255/35/18 Dunlop Z1* and got slight rubbing even though the suspension remained unchanged.
