XI and offset

Have a 2004 325 XI. Changing wheels and tires to 225/45R17. Do they require an offset as OEM is 205/50R17?

The offset is for the wheels themselves, what you've written there is the tire size. The 205 size is typically for 17x7 rims, and the 225 is typically for 17x8 rims. If you don't know the first number is the width of the tire in milimeters, the second is the aspect ratio of the width to sidewall, the third is the rim size (in your case 17 inches). If you are looking for offset information, that depends on each rim. Either way, if you're running at stock ride height you won't have any rubbing issues.

So I guess the question is, what rims did you buy and what offset do they have? It should be a number that reads ETXX.

For OEM rim, the offset number post on the inside star wall, two number like 45 or 55 .., that is offset # by mm.
You could see also some # like 7.5J or 8H, that is the rim width by inch.

You will not have to buy new rims with a different-than-OEM offset to fit those tires.

What is it that you are concerned about? Most important issue is rolling diameter has to be the same all around and ideally (I say that loosely because many are not concerned) the same as the stock because the rolling diameter is syncronized with your spedometer. If your diameter is different than stock that will throw your speedo out. Offset refers to where the wheels sit in the wheelwell........toward the middle of the car or toward the outside. The lowere the number the farther the wheel sits to the outside, the higher the number the more toward the center of the car. Sounds like you bought wheels and tires that are the same all around and the rolling diameters are essentially identidical (within 0.1 inch). (use this link for future reference - http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html) I run offsets of 47 in the front and 50 on the back with no rubbing issues at all. You can also go to any wheel site like tirerack.com an input your car to look for ideal offsets.
