changing speakers

Hi all,

I just bought a E46 convertible m sport..I love everything about it except for the poor sound quality since it's not really loud and rubbish when the volume goes up so I was sniffing around for some speakers to replace the standard speakers.

I found these ones but my question is (since im quite a noob at this), will I be able to place these and replace the front speakers without drilling holes and all that stuff AND can I also place these in the back (same ones) or do I need other types of speakers for the rear. If so, can anyone recommend me a good brand and good and not so expensive speaker?

The first set you listed (SPG-13c2) is a coaxial set, the tweeter is mounting on the woofer. This will not fit well in the front doors, as they would not sound great due to the tweeter then being mounted at foot level - the higher frequencies would be drowned before they reached your ears (given you were sitting in the normal seated position).

You want to look for a component set (which will have tweeters as separate components to the woofers), so that the tweeter can be mounted in the factory position (higher in the door, pointing to your head level). Looking at the store you posted though, the component sets appear about double the price of that Type G coaxial set. What is your budget for new speakers? Also if you get some with much higher power handling you may need a new amp.

Alpine is a good brand (although there are many others), and I doubt you would be disappointed with their speakers however I've never heard of their "SXE" speakers, so I can't comment on them. I would aim for 6.5" speakers though, as they'll give you more kick & mid bass, but some people are telling me that they need modifying to fit the factory position. Looking at that adapter you've found however, I can't see why they wouldn't work.

And about the amp, is it just to get the maximum power out of the speakers?

P.S. my budget for two speakers is max 100 pounds I would say (assuming they give me a lot of sound then )

Yes, that speaker set would be a better choice.

The amp doesn't need to get maximum power out of the speakers, but it is best to match the power handling capabilities of the speakers to the power output of the amp - otherwise one or the other will exceed its limits and you may cause damage to the speakers. It is easier to under-power a speaker and damage it than it is to overpower the speaker. Power itself does not determine how "loud" the speakers will be either, you need to compare the sensitivity of the speakers too.

Have you looked at other stores? 85 pounds seems like a lot for a set of Type-G speakers like that. Also, if you're only a pair of speakers, then a two channel amp will be cheaper than a four channel amp as well.

I see..I believe I have an amp laying at home somewhere..I think it was a 4 channel as well so I'll save some money there. Ya I found other shops that sell speakers for half the price but it's just not alpine..not that it really matters to me since I go for quality first.
