Another help me choose components thread

Ok, i'm about to pull the trigger on one of these sets and wanna hear some opinions. Looking at the Alpine Type X-REF or PRO or Boston Pro's. Haven't heard the bostons but the alpines sound pretty good. Are the boston pros worth the extra cash (over the type x-ref) and will they sound significantly better than the alpines?

I know everyone will tell me to listen to both and compare, but I can't find a shop to hear the boston pro's.

Will run them off an alpine pdx-100.4

I would love to help you, but I can't say I've heard the Boston's in person, so any judgment on my part wouldn't be transparent.

Try hitting up a caraudio forum (a US one) and ask there, you will have a much greater chance at getting useful feedback for gear like that - you may even find someone local to you that is willing to let you listen to theirs already in their car.

Unfortunately most of the people here aren't willing to spend that kind of money on speakers, they're just after replacements for their blown Harmon Kardon speakers or the like. Good luck though, and I'm sure which ever way you go you won't be disappointed - both Alpine and Boston are very reputable brands.

Tigerdirect has now polks 6501 speakers for 100 bucks a set. 100 rms per channel.

Alpine makes 17s for similar set which sells for like 135 a set.

Boston pro imo

The alpine tweets are special but the scan speak mids are pretty bland

Unfortunately, they are refurbished. Sonic Electronics has them new for ~$120 shipped on Ebay.

The Boston Pro's have always been pretty good but will they fit? I remember the woofers being quite large, not sure if that has changed.

I would favor the Type-Xs since they have the shallow mount basket and the neo magnet on the woofer.
