For $2K BMW will paint your car with a special color not available as part of the standard ordering. It also offers a nice assortment of non-standard interiors.

A customised exterior/interior usually at a rather high premium, as the customer choses specifics and BMW create for you.

Nothing to do with mechanisms or engineering.
