IPOD install? what are my options?

I am very new with mods, as in, I haven't done any! However, I'm getting sick and tired of my iTrip radio transmitter. I was wondering what options i have so that i can wire my ipod straight into my head unit. i know there's the ice link, but i'd like to try to install it without paying more. is there a way just to wire it in directly into a head unit. if not, what is the cheapest way for me to go about doing it?

If your head unit will accept the BMW Aux Input then thats the best thing for you. If not youll have to go with an FM modulator. I dont like them at all. Out of all of those i think the itrip works best. I would go with the icelink or the blitzsafe though.

Is there any easy way to determine if my head unit will accep the BMW Aux Input? I recall someone mentioning BMW older than 9/02 have an older version or something. My car is an 02...what is the easiest way to determine this?

if i dont have a cd changer can i use that wire setup and run it down to connect to my ipod and have it set up in my center tray?

if i do that i can still use my stering wheel controls right?

this is just an idea and i have never done any mod consisting of audio wires and i am pretty scared to mess this up so if someone can walk me thru as to what steps has to be done that would be so great
