i do go out for hours to a certain lake but i go to look for osprey fishing so I don't even look for the egrets and herons, so those opportunities just come to me. It also helps to know where to go and what to look for, which takes a little time figuring out. Also if you stare at the same bird for long enough you'll eventually see it do something. They eat all day.

Those are some very good shots. It takes a lot patience and luck to get them in action like that. Knowing their habits helps too!
