This is what I'm trying to figure out. I have a roth ira with american funds, I am going to get in on a 401k at work soon but I don't know if I should do the roth or the traditional ira since our job offers both options.

I'm not concern with the maximums right now because I can't afford to contribute that much anyway.

I contribute to my 401k at work and have a Roth IRA I started several years ago. Is your company providing a match?

unfortunately no. Kind of sucks but nothing I can do lol.

Do it in this order:

- Max out company 401k match, if any
- Max out roth
- Max out 401k

Invest the money in about 70% equities, 30% bonds. For equities, do Vanguard S&P500 index + Vanguard international index, then do Vanguard Total Bond index for the bond portion. You will be pretty well covered with this setup.
