I don't mean to scare you, but in general everything took me nearly 2-3 times as long to finish than what I initially planned on my first engine rebuild. Probably the most nasty one was receiving the wrong parts from vendors...which I got to foot the shipping bill on. In one case, the part was completely unusable from a well known vendor, and they refused to take any action.

I don't think you'll run into the exact same issues I did, as I can guide you through a lot of this, but there still will be "surprise" $500 costs by the time you get this back together.

I seem to remember reading a recent thread on these, I don't think they made much at all over stock M54B30 cams.

Also, if you did get these, make sure they're HARDENED, if not....well you know where I'm going.

PM sent.

This will explain it best. Without this a cheap set of cams will probably fail......quick.

So are you saying that a set of factory OEM cams, made and sold by BMW, are suspect to failing?

That's not at all what I am saying.

Please don't make assumptions for me.

OF COURSE AVL SCHRICK GmbH are hardened, they are Chilled hardened.

"Why are SCHRICK camshafts so special ?

They are machined to precise tolerances,
using the latest CNC machines.
They are usually made from expensive, extremely
wearresistant “chilled” cast-iron.
Warranty: 1 year without kilometer limitation."

CHILLED HARDENED:

"Chilled cast iron outperforms traditional induction-hardened cast iron billets typically found in the U.S. Cast iron cams are typically used for flat tappet applications whereas steel cams are used for roller follower applications.

In this process, surface hardening of the cams is obtained by locating metal chills in the mold. These chills act as quenches which remove heat rapidly. The rapid cooling makes the material near the chill much harder than the surrounding material without the chill. The hardening depth goes much beyond any other process. Other types of hardening only produce a thin "scab" hardness with very soft metal underneath."

Have a great day.

^^^ Anyways On another note. Going against what i was told

I was convinced that going with an 84.5mm bore was pretty much the only option I had.

1 Reason I was told is that the rings only come in .5mm increments and although the engine can't be bored anymore that 84.5 should be fine.

Worst thing that could happen is Re-sleeve.......

So I Ordered the 8.8:1 84.5mm CP Pistons

I'm going to hold off on the ATI Dampener and get a UUC Light weight flywheel+M5 Clutch and Greg's Oil Pump.

How does that sound?

One step at a time. Pistons are good.

Next step I would look at are bearings. What are you doing for those?

I'd get the damper before the lightweight flywheel. But I actually like the dual mass flywheels.

Yes , you don't really need the vanos air fitting or the vanos(single) turning tool.

Any chance you'd be selling this kit when you're done with it ?
