Does the fabric actually have to come off?!

Hi all,

I need HELP! I love my E46 2001 330ci vert but its killing me. The final locking mechanism for the roof stopped working a little while back. I managed to secure it and I took it to my independent garage who have done some solid work with the brakes and suspension in the past.
However, after several hours and 200 they have given me a fault code of 0034 and believe that the microswitch and some wiring in the lume needs replacing that runs down the passenger side. Ok...
To do this they have told me that they need an upholsterer to cut and remove the fabric, so they can then replace the microswitch etc make sure it is 100% and then re-upholster. They think altogether this is likely to cost aroung 1000.
Although I am certain they believe this is what is necessary, I am a little doubtful and concerned they haven't done this with an E46 before and are therefore inexperienced. I can't find any roof specialists within 200 miles of me (NOrth Yorkshire UK) I am seriously considering taking it to BMW as I dont think they would cost much more than 1000 anyway!
1. Does the fabric need to come off for fault code 0034 or for the microswitch?
2. Is this costing reasonable?
3. Is going to BMW madness or due the tricky job, a valid consideration?!
