Black Exhaust Tips - Cheap

Tired of polishing those chrome exhaust tips? Me too, paint them black. Not a technical DIY, just showing what you can accomplish with a rattle can.

1) Drop muffler (varies car to car). Note: M3s exhaust tips have 1 rivet on the top, 2 on the bottom. You have to drop the muffler to get to the top rivet.
2) Drill out rivets by drilling straight down on them. Then use a punch vertically and a flathead screwdriver and hammer horizontally as needed to pop them out.
3) Sand with high grit, just want to ruff up the surface, dont need to be so aggressive to make groves. Every finish depends on prep, take your time.
4) Paint with header paint, baking instructions vary with type. Its real nasty stuff so when you oven bake it open the doors, windows and turn on fans.
5) While wearing safety glasses, install new rivets. If you dont have a rivet gun you can get a cheap one from harbor freight w/ Al rivets. Note steel and aluminum may cause corrosion. If concerned about it, buy some stainless rivets.
6) Reinstall muffler (varies car to car).

Pretty easy mod, looks great on M3s. I acutally bought a spare muffler locally and did it all on the spare so I didnt have to have it off the car all day.

I used header paint, whatever they had at my local chain autoparts strore. Scott at 6speed said that engine paint / BBQ paint didnt hold up (1200 degree), so you may want to get 2000 degree header paint.

I used engine enamel paint...too late but i just found out that this is really difficult to remove..hopefully i wont have a change of heart on the black tips because its really hard to find exhaust tips for the zhp muffler

I was lazy, and got BMW black chrome exhaust tips - 55mm - for the 328i from ECS for $5 each.

i dont think 55mm tips fit on the m3

Yea, I had trouble finding tips that fit so I did this.
