Temperature Gauge e46 M3?

Hey guys, I've had my car for like 6 months and haven't had to use the AC until this past week. I recharged it myself and had no issues whatsoever for a few days. Now in the past two days I've noticed this recurring problem (...well it happened twice)

When starting the car and turning the AC on high immediately the temperature gauge goes waaaay over to the right, not quite in the red but like at the other little tick mark on the right side. When I turn the air off, the needle will slowly creep back to the dead center and when I turn the air back on..the gauge doesn't move. Its like it's working the engine harder only when I turn it on immediately after starting the car. Think it's a faulty gauge? I have no idea what to look for or where to start. Is this normal? The needle moves right back to the center as soon as the AC is switched off. Once again, when I turn it back on, it doesn't move, really strange. The oil temp gauge has been a little higher than usual lately too, but not much, it moves around.

It's also been 85+ degrees on both occasions this has occured. Anyone have any input? Thanks!

Have you done any upgrades at all to the cooling system? Sometimes the extra strain of the air conditioning being on can cause the engine to overheat a bit.

If you have access to an infrared thermometer, you could always check the temperature at the intake on the radiator to see if it's really fluctuating.

Flush and bleed your cooling system first. If that doesnt help look into checking your water pump and thermostat.
