what brand battery to buy?

My battery is now dead. I think its the original that came with the car! My buddy has told me to only use BMW batteries. he has heard that there are sometimes electrical issues when you throw a cheap walmart battery in them. I don't know much about electrical systems but I would think a battery is a battery. a walmart or parts store one is $70 where as the dealer wants $150 or $200. whats your opinions?

ALL batteries in the usa(let me say that again) ALL batteries in the USA are made by 1 of 2 companies. Either Johnson controls or exide. Doesn't matter if they are shartmart or direct from BMW.

12.6 Volts is 12.6 Volts whether it comes from a nuclear reactor or a potato battery. The car doesn't know the difference.

There are batteries from auto parts stores that are known to fit well in the space provided and be cheap. IIRC Autozone has a DL-49 or 49-DL that works well, thats what I bought.

One more thing - if you end up going with a battery from Advance Auto Parts, you can buy online for in-store pickup and use coupon codes to get a bunch of money off. Something like $30 off an order of 75 or more IIRC.

Edited to add: I recently learned that the new E90 cars need to be "recalibrated" when a new battery is installed, and that requires a special tool. It does not require a special battery though. Why it would need to be recalibrated I have no idea.

Duralast from Autozone works fine in my car.

Check online for local parts stores "weekly ads" sales. Batteries on sale can save you a quick $20-30.

I also have the 49-DL Duralast from AutoZone. I think it is a good battery.

Only thing when using the type 49s is shoeing up the battery because the battery is shorter in height.

They all output the same volts, but amps do differ. Duralast outputs more amps than stock, I believe.

Don't forget to bring your old battery when buying a new one or you'll get a core charge.
