Question Tyre noise?

Hello,

I've been experiencing a strange noise lately, somehow like ball bearings noise. I checked the ball bearings, the mechanic told me they are ok. I've checked the rims, ok. Could it be the tyres?

The noise disappeares above 80-90 kmph and accentuates when breaking...

Tyres are 225/45/17, car: 325xiA nFL

Respectfully,
Alexandru-Florentin Popescu

I had a similar issue. My issue was a bad ball joint. A lot of play in the left front wheel. You might want to try jacking your car up to see if there is any play in any of your wheels.

Tire can be the source. I had a problem with Yokohama S drives that started "singing" at speed. It was obvious as outer and inner tire cupping was identified on all four tires. This occurred with 15K miles on them. Pressure checks and rotation was performed as normal. Replacement tires (Proxes 4) show no indication of cupping at 10K.

@svdw

I guess the mechanic noticed if the wheels were playing when he checked for noise in ball bearings. I will try another service... Thanks for quick reply!

@White_Knuckles

Is there any way to find out for sure if the tyres are making this noise? Thank you

Feel the inner & outer edges of the tyre treads looking for ridges like a saw tooth. Inflate them to 43 PSI. This moves the ride point to the center of the tyre. This is just for testing.

Front wheel bearings make a whooshing sound when they start to fail.

Swap your tires to different corners and see if the noise comes from the same place.

Front axles can cause the symptoms you are describing also.

Have you ever been on the Transfagarasan highway?
