The best is to not attract any bears in the first place. If you have to defend yourself, then use a 3 1/4 slug.

Anything > .44 or a slug. Maybe 00 buck if it's a small boy. Generally bears will run if you fire a warning shot, but if not, you better be prepared to shoot. You don't need anything over a 3" slug, as that stuff is usually only reserved for elephants and HUGE game.

That said, practice shooting a slug and in adrenaline situations. It's easy to shoot a paper target 25 yards away with a slug, but throw in a moving bear, and your heart racing/life depending on it and it is a whole different situation.
