are there any gains with this? or it's just a prerequisite for boosted engines?

prob no but in for answer anyway

im sure its just to strenghten the engine to hold more boost but if theres no boost its just a extra strong engine not a higher performer ..

Dropping the compression with forged pistons would actually result in a loss of power on an NA engine. The purpose of doing so is to run higher boost levels via turbo or supercharger to make big power.

JE also offers 11.5 and 12.5:1 compression pistons which raise compression, resulting in more power (with supporting mods, high octane fuel, and ecu calibration).

Very nice. Do you guys plan on building the motor in Mike's e46 m3? Other than the Pistons to lower comp, what else would be commended when building the s54? I'm not familiar with just how strong the stock internals are.

No plans for anything yet.

Forged pistons & rods as well as ARP head studs are probably the main components to focus on when building the engine to handle more power.

Then things like coated rod & main bearings, new chains, guides, tensioners, gaskets, hardware, etc come into play. Having the engine out of the car and opened up, there are a lot of the "while we're in here" additions to an engine build.
