My Ride: depends on the mood
Question Vanos repair. Seal kit? or Rattle kit?

So I have a very slighhht chirp coming from the vanos and a rpm dip on my 328ci. This only happens on cold starts, and all noise and symptoms disappear once the car is warmed up. Im getting some items to fix my Vanos from Besian systems.

My question is, they offer a Seal kit, and also a Rattle kit (which replaces the bearing). Now am I right in assuming id only need to order the seal kit? Is the rattle fix kit only needed if my vanos made more death sounds?

Now I know nothing is a guarantee with internet diagnosing, but just looking for some direction. Advice from people who have done this would help greatly!

This is how much noise my e46 makes. identical.

My car has slight higher rpms for the first minute or two also and that's before and after I had the vanos seals done with that kit. I think it's
Normal?

Yes when cold the rpms start off higher >1k rpm then gradually drops to normal idle after couple minutes, thats normal behaviour.

From Raj @ Beisan systems.

"All the vanos units have loose piston bearings and thus can rattle. But a resonance in the movements needs to be reached for the rattle to occur. We find on the E46 the 320 (Europe), 323, and 330 are susceptible to having the rattle while the 325 and 328 donít usually experience it. If you have one of the carís thatís susceptible then I recommend you install the rattle kit regardless whether you currently have the rattle or not.

If you have a 98/99-00 model you have the M52TU engine. This has a special symptom on cold weather cold start where the RPM drops and recovers repeatedly. A rattle can also occur with the RPM drop. The vanos seals resolve this RPM drop and rattle."
