To quickly figure out if it's a probable head gasket issue is to pull the plugs and see if there is coolant on the plugs as well as checking to see if there's coolant in the oil. Those are two key signs with these cars...

"Easy Button" I've owned mine for 12 plus years and ~326,000, therefore yes I love my 00 E46 323i. Wouldn't trade it for anything else, but that's just me!

I wouldn't say it's rare for the reverse to go completely... check out the website noreverse.org

There are a LOT of people there that have logged complaints of their reverse gear failing including me. I lost my reverse gear years back with only 60k miles on the car... wound up doing a 5spd manual tranny swap.

Also to keep in mind, this reverse gear failure isn't specific to only the 323... it also happened on the early 328 and 325 cars as well.
