rear end roar....

2001 325i, 172k, been an amazing ride,
great milage, rarely an issue.
had a pair of Rikken 255-50-16's,
just about wore them to a nub...
started getting a roar.... (speed related) in the rear,
seemingly more on the drivers side.
Thought it was because the tires were getting SQUARE from wear..
replaced them (SAMS CLUB) with BF Goodrich stock, nice tire,
roar was louder at high speed, drove for a week,
took back and SAMS rebalanced .. said they were out of balance pretty bad.
Now it drives better and roar is minimal at low speed but as bad as ever on hwy.
I crawled under and notice the pass rear shock looked shot,
leaking and the cover had fallen down.

1. Can the busted shock(s) let this roar happen?
2. Are shocks a DIY thing ?
3. How often (GULP! ) does a rear e46 diff fail ? (seems as if inside of tire tread is warmer than rest of tire.
