Macallan used to be my go to for single malts, but I've tried to expand my selections more and more over the years.

i've started developing a taste for scotch because my ghetto friends like to pop bottles of johnny walker, but all the mixers they give in nyc clubs taste like crap, so i just have it on the rocks. i have no idea what i'm doing though; i wouldnt even know the difference between JW blue and black in a blind taste test. what's a good starter scotch for a noob like me?

honestly mike, read my 2nd or 3rd post on the first page... get a cheapo scotch like johnny red, dewar's white, mix it with some perrier or club soda, lots of ice, until you can say you have "acquired" a taste for it...

its definitely hard to get down from the start, i can't remember the last time someone told me they had scotch for the first time and actually liked it lol

anyways... dewars white and johnny red should be good for now... if you don't mind spending a little more, you can go with a 12 year like glevlevit or johnny black. once you move on to those, toss an ice cube in it and see how that goes.

idk... just take it from there i guess

I'm not much of a drinker, but I don't mind JW Red Label with ginger ale.

sorry i shouldve elaborated more. i already do "like" it; i just can't tell between good scotch and bad scotch. i've never tried jw red though. would it be a big step down from the black label that i usually have? id rather save some money if i can't tell the difference anyways lol

If the bite of the liquor is too strong add a splash of warm water. Anytime you make something cold, you are masking the flavor (avoid drinking it on the rocks for this reason). Try that until you can drink it neat and actually enjoy it.

Johnny Walker and all the other blends are garbage. Single malt is the only way to go.

Kushy...for me it was an older/more mature choice.
IMO, I wouldn't use scotch for a crazy mixed drink. It's a sipper, not a shooter or simple cocktail addition. I came to scotch after I got past the drink to get hammered stage. I just drink now to appreciate the flavors, to socialize and to get a nice buzz but still be cogent.

I find it funny. When I drink scotch, it goes down soooo smooth. When my girlfriend smells or takes a sip of scotch, she starts coughing lol

Mike, most of the scotches we are mentioning in this thread can be bought in mini form. Next time you're at a liquor store and want to try scotch get three of them and give them a shot and see which ones you gravitate towards. Adding water and ice are considered bad form but you will learn what you like. I personally like to add a cube of ice to my scotch.

drink more than one at the same time, treat it like a wine tasting... or if you are at a restaurant, have one and try something different/better

a good scotch can be determined in how deep the flavors and aromas are, and how "smooth"you can swallow it at room temp (60ish degrees)

if you are drinking it with ice, don't waste your money on anything better than johnny black or any other 12 year
