Just a side note. I replaced this amp with a more powerful Alpine. The Alpine is great definitely cleaner. But today I had to drive a total of 4 hours with the volume at 27 out of 40 and the last hour of my ride the alpine went into thermal overload protection. That never happened with this crunch amplifier. Just saying.

If your new amp is going into "limp" mode then you have it set wrong, you shouldnt need to turn up the gain on your amp more then halfway, and you may need to adjust the equilizer on your headunit to keep it out of thermal overload, also newer amps tend to do this during the break in period, I have always had my new amps heat up and turn off until I get them adjusted right where I want them and broken in.

I bought the amp used. Good point about the gain. I was adjusting it after I first installed it and I never turned them back down. Now I just set both gains to the nom setting. It will be awhile before i am able to go for a long ride and see if it dose it again. I don't know how much that will make a diffrence. I know it gets hot where I mounted them (above the spare, below the carpet). Back in the late 90's I had 2 Alpine MRV 1005's profesionaly installed and in the summer after about an hour or so with the volume at about 75% they they would go into TO protection. Its just really hot down here.

Ouch man....yeah you need to get air moving on that amp, a little trick we used to use in my car show was to mount a small like 5 in personal fan in the trunk bc I done like to look st it on to my box. You might have to wire in a dc/ac converter a c/dc

If the gain doesn't fix the problem I was thinking of adding a small 12v amp fan on the driver side of the trunk and 1inch by 5inch slot on the passenger side. But summers almost over and I never have a problem once it gets cooler out.
My current set up
