Looking for a M3 needle in a used car haystack (San Diego)

Hello All,

I'm looking to buy an E46 M3 as a second car. Here are my criteria:
  • Budget <$20k.
  • Mileage: I don't care about high mileage as long as the service records are available.
  • Body style: I have been searching for convertibles but would consider a clean coupe.
  • 6-Speed Manual. No SMG. My daily driver is an E90 2006 330 Sedan with slush box and I NEED the 3rd pedal. My left leg is wasting away...
  • Color: Any except Alpine. (But if it's a clean Alpine, I might be convinced.)
  • Mods: Definite preference for stock spec. Tasteful cosmetic mods are fine. Extensive engine mods are less desirable, but let's talk.
  • Clean title is a must.
  • Ability to pass a pre-purchase inspection by BMW or specialist shop.
  • Prefer local, but willing to travel IF you can send high quality pics and a video tour of the car.

In the end, I've decided that the only way to get what I want is to reach out to the enthusiast community. I've seen a couple local cars but they were either ratty or failed at PPI, so this is getting frustrating. A lot of non-car people buy these cars and then can't afford to maintain them, so the one's I've seen throw engine codes, missed Inspection 2 etc..

I don't see this as too much to ask, but feel free to chime in on this thread if you think that my criteria are unrealistic.

Lastly, I've got the finances in place for this and can move quickly when the right car presents.

Thanks for listening! PM me or reply to this thread.

OP, quick search of autotrader for M3 6MT <$20k =

162 any distance
12 in 100 miles from downtown

if you bump your price range up a little you can do these:

2004 BMW M3 Convertible = http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...r_id=309110505
$23,995
50,000 miles

2002 BMW M3 Convertible = http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...r_id=305972226
$20,875
54,945 miles

both are local

Hey thanks for the bump. I was all over Autotrader and I ended up looking at a few cars. Liked two cars enough to go to and pay for a pre-purchase inspection and both failed...

HERMES - It's funny, but I went to this dealer about a month ago. At the time, they refused to take a penny under $23k. Pity - I would have probably bought it.

In the end, I got discouraged and widened my search. I found this little beauty instead. It's not a M-car, but it's a lot of fun, quite rare with 6-speed and I scored a great deal from a Lexus dealer who didn't know what to do with it.

Thanks! I was never a big fan of the Z-roadster, but the coupe has lines ilke it was style by Pininfarina. It's probably Chris Bangle's best work. Here's a couple more pics. Locals might recognize the setting (Torrey Pines)

Hey - it's nothing personal against Alpine. It's just my Mom always bought white cars when I was growing up. I don't know what that did to my Psyche, but I just can't deal with having a white car. Stupid reason, I know...
