BMW M30 3.5 Problem, headgasket.

I'm having trouble diagnosing if this engine has a blown headgasket.

This is my uncles car in Venezuela.

This car suffered an overheat and it has been sitting for more than 4 months in a cold and humid enviroment, I went to check the oil and it was low but black in color not a milkshake.
I got the stuff to change the oil and when I took the oil drain plug off some crystal clear water came out for an instant than black oil. This car has never used coolant as long as I can remember only water.

I changed the oil (6 quarts) and put the filter in and started it up. It ran fine except for the valves. I ran it for half an hour and bled the cooling system.

The car NEVER went past the middle mark on the temp guage and the water looked clean as hell.

However there was white smoke coming out of the exhaust and it was to dark to tell if the oil was mixed with water or if the oil was just new.

The oil cap has A FEW white spots under it but this is a cold and humid enviroment and short distances can also cause this, not only a bad headgasket.

Can somebody help me?!?!

Had a similar complaint on a M20 (E30). Head ended up being cracked thru the coolant passage & #5 exhaust valve seat. Although in my case it would blow white smoke and the cooling sys. had a ton of pressure. The coolant & oil were ok, but after approx. 1/2 hr the temp gauge would start to move towards the red. I also was unable to get any hydrocarbons to show up in the coolong sys. If it has higher mileage, I would recommend pullin the head for inspection and replacing the head gasket. Hopefully just the gasket has worn out & started to leak. It's a straight foward job. Good luck.

Thanks, what can I use to clean the surfaces to check if there are any cracks? Is their a good DIY to use?

If you have a compressor/shop air there are these bristle like pads for die grinders that work really well, and won't remove any metal.

If not, a scotch-brite pad & a lil elbow grease will sufice

Search for diy instructions & don't forget new head bolts torqued propery.
