There was a real CSL for sale not too long ago. Some guy in Florida was selling it. He said it had to be used for off road purposes only that it couldnt be registered in the US legally. It wasn't just the emissions it had to do with airbags and some other things as well.

Let me clear this up, there is only ONE CSL in the USA as of now and yes this is the same one that was seen at Active Autowerke. This is the real deal and it is street legal and registered (hence the license plate). I know the person that brought the car to the US, and he was the original owner. Too bad he sold it

Here are some photos i took of the car

My Ride: 2003 BMW M5
I know this is a massively old thread, but it's on a subject I'm very interested in. Always loved the CSL, and it is my goal to find / acquire one (next to impossible - I know...).

Is anyone aware of any CSLs in the US and where they might be located? I have heard many rumors of more than one being here (to the tune of 3+ on the east coast and 2+ on the west coast), but other than the one in Miami, have no leads. Any help would be appreciated.

The Miami car is shown in this thread. And there are options in registering it (show and display, etc).

I don't get how everyone drools over the csl and hates smg at the same time.

The CSL was designed principally for track work, where the SMG makes the most sense. For daily driving the standard M3 is a better bet (as, in my opinion is the manual transmission).

There are plenty of us who like SMG for daily driving.

CSL SMG tune is also different. However, you can easily flash any M3 to the same software.

I've been running the CSL smg software on my e46 m3 for the last 3 years and to be honest i dont recall noticing anything different that the regular smg software.

The only side effect that tune had was that now my car starts in auto shift s3 mode by default. Whereas the regular smg software used to be s3 manual mode.

As for shifting performance,i wonder if the difference would only really be noticed in s6 shift mode, especially on a track?

I also have the M-Track mode programmed. Now that you can most definitely notice as DSC is a lot less intrusive.

The "Show and Display" exception to the NHTSA (and subsequent EPA process) is not available for the E46 CSL.
See http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/

As to the S&D category the biggest hurdle for the CSL is the requirement that the vehicle be of "exceptional technological and/or historical significance" if there are more than 500 models produced. This language is strictly interpreted by NHTSA and the CSL does not qualify.

In general the CSL, and any similar vehicle, could be imported - if it were fitted with the safety and emissions control hardware necessary to satisfy US motor vehicle requirements. But then ... it wouldn't be a CSL any longer.

The importation process and status of the above-pictured "US" CSL have never been outlined and proven, as far as I or anyone I have heard from can tell. (The attachment of a license plate is not necessarily determinative.) Whether it has actually been accepted by NHTSA and EPA, legally imported and legally titled+registered into the USA remains unclear. Subsequent disposition of the car within this country would be problematic.

None of this, of course, changes the fact that it is interesting.

All great information - thank you. I think the best way to do this will be to research that particular car.

So I contacted Active Autowerke today, and unfortunately they didn't have concrete information on who bought / sold the vehicle. Any help in finding it would be hugely appreciated.

My Ride: has rear floor tears
Off the top of my head the Dinan S2 package for the E46 M gives comparable gains (to the CSL package) enginewise.
Then you can get the roof, trim, bumpers, seats, smg software, suspension, etc...
This is the most viable option for having a CSL-like e46M...
Otherwise your'e best of waiting until its 25 years old. You will likely need to shelf out hundreds of thousands at that point for a genuine example.

Once its 25 years old EAG's gonna stock up on them (like theyre doing with the E36 LTWs) and sell them for six figures a piece.

You can not import a CSL m3, it will fail safety requirements per NHTSA. Loophole: you import it for show/race only and still pay massive fees, been there, researched that. Loophole two: do the above, buy recked e46 m3 and do the unthinkable... Tried to import one when I was military and stationed in Germany. Any further questions PM me.

Disclaimer: All information for importation of the e46 m3 CSL can be found on NHTSA website, do to the nature of majority of the ways to import it being illegal I do not advise/motivate any illegal acts

Donovan.
