I personally don't have much experience with this on our bmw's, however any connection could leak, only way to check is follow each line and look for oil build up at the connections.

To me the top while in movement seems a little slow and seems under powered, but that is normal.

Good Luck

Well, mine no longer opens if I don't help it along. It just keeps making the attemp but comes back down. I wonder if new gas shocks would help it any

Refer to my thread http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...988&highlight=
I posted several PDF files which present information per your question.

Go to a pharmacy and buy a large syringe. I found topping up with a syringe very effective.

Read page 6.

and online repair manual LINK
E46 PAGE 6 DOES NOT SHOW YOU HOW TO FILL IT DIRECTSYOU TO A REPAIR MANUAL. iS IT POSSIBLE TO BE ON THE LOW MARK EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE NO LEAKS? iS THERE A WAY TO MEASURE THE PRESSURE GENERATED BY THE PUMP TO SEE IF IT MEETS THE MINIMUM? mY TOP GOES UP AND DOWN COMPLETELY AS LONG AS I HELP IT ON THE START OF LOWERING AND RAISING THEN IT WILL COMPLETE THE CYCLE COMPLETELY BUT IT SEEMS SLOW. iTS LIKE THE LOWERING OR RAISING MOTOR DO NOT DEVELOP ENOUGH FORCE TO DE THE JOB.

gbaker, there is no info on how to fill the hydraulic reservoir on your link its all about a leak you have on the cylinder. Where is the info you posted on how to fill the hydraulic system??? Pics would be helpful.
Thanks!

DKUC,
WERE YOU TOLD BY A MECHANIC THAT THIS SLOW OPERATION IS NORMAL. I HAVE YOUR SAME PROBLEM EXCEPT I HAVE TO HELP THE LOWERING OR RAISING AT THE START. IT SEEMS I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH POWER ON THE MOTOR OR HYDRAULIC PRESSURE BECAUSE WNEN IT WAS WORKING IT NOT ONLY DID IT ALONE BUT MUCH FASTER. iTS SOMEWHERE AROUND 20 SECONDS LOWERING OR RAISING FOR A COMPLETE CYCLE.
