How To Get Your BMW Stolen: Leave Your Car Running While You Go Into The Store

Did you know that if you keep your car running while you run into a store, someone might just steal it? This is what happened to a NJ woman who visited a gas station's mini mart in her 2011 BMW.

The Jersey Journal reports, "At 11:46 p.m. a 26-year-old Pilesgrove woman pulled into a gas station on the westbound side of Route 3 and left the 3-series luxury car running as she popped into the store, police said. While she was in the store another BMW pulled into the gas station and police believe that someone jumped out of that BMW and into her BMW, cops said, adding that both vehicles went west on Route 3."

guess she didn't know the trick with the push to start where you take the key out with the engine running and lock the doors once your outside.

This stuff happens all the time in Mn because people are trying to keep their cars warm. I have even heard of people getting their car stolen with kids still in them. Now that is stupid.

i used to do that. i had an E36 that had a starter problem for a few days. it wouldn't start again if i switched the engine off. so when i stopped near shops, i used to leave the engine running for a couple of minutes while i get my business done. but i never took my eyes off it for even a minute.

you can start cars with newer remotes without the key (even without CA), letting you lock the car with the engine running

The article quotes the Jersey Journalist, in a site called the "Gothamist", which has a picture of the NY skyline... so I'm guessing NY/NJ.

I need to start leaving my car running. Maybe somebody will steal the piece of shiit. That way my E46 becomes their problem and I receive an insurance payout.

I leave it running all the time. I put the drivers window down, close door, reach thru open window and hit the door lock button, the exterior handles are disabled, when I return I double pull the inside handle to open the door.

I used do this, especially in the winter. Im not saying its the smartest thing, but I dont assume that my car is going to get stolen if I leave it running out in the burbs either. I lock it now because I dont want anyone to steal my radar detector or anything else i keep in the car.

to bad insurance companies don't pay out if your car has the keys in the ignition when it is stolen

Yes they do. A loss is a loss. Thats like saying they wont payout if your at fault in a crash. Now your rates may go UP, but I am pretty sure no insurance company has an im stupid indemnification clause. If they did, how would all of the 15 year old texting females get insured.
